With the palms of the hands facing one another, place all the fingertips and thumbs together. Spread the fingers and palms apart so that only the finger pads are touching. Just holding your hands in this position will help enhance mental acuity.
The mudra is held in front of the heart, but when used during certain situations, you may let the mudra rest in your lap. Sometimes I lift the mudra towards my third-eye and let my thumbs rest right between my eyebrows.
For additional focus, when holding the mudra, turn your gaze upward and place your tongue on the roof of your mouth as you inhale. Release your tongue as you exhale. Take your time to be still and to breathe deeply, slowly and consciously.
Hakini mudra can be used anytime you need to improve your mental capacity or increase your brain power. It improves concentration and memory while also balancing the right and left hemispheres of the brain. Holding your hands in this way promotes clear thinking by bringing a sense of calm to the mind.
